BAGHDAD— Iraq’s president says his country faces huge shortcomings (kém hiệu năng, thiếu năng lực) defending its airspace and seas, and that Iraqi military commanders want American military training help (giúp đỡ huấn luyện quân sự)

In an interview with Iraqi state TV broadcast (buổi phát sóng của đài truyền hình trung ương) Friday, Jalal Talabani said he’s read numerous reports by senior Iraqi army officers who all said the nation needs some sort of (một hình thức nào đó, một mức độ nhận định) U.S. presence.

The U.S. and Iraq failed to agree on whether to keep American troops in Iraq into next year, and the U.S. military will pull out all its troops (rút toàn bộ binh lính ra khỏi) from the country by January.

Iraqi officials balked at (ngần ngại, không dứt khoát quyết định) giving the American forces the legal protections (bảo vệ pháp lý) that Washington wanted.

Talabani is a Kurd from northern Iraq. The Kurds were the only political group (phái chính trị) in Iraq openly supporting (công khai ủng hộ) a further American military presence (sự hiện diện quân sự) in Iraq.
