Chevron takes full responsibility for Brazil oil spill

Chevron says the leak has been plugged (được bịt lại, lấp lại, nút lại)

US oil company Chevron says it accepts full responsibility for (thừa nhận toàn bộ trách nhiệm về sự việc ) an oil spill  (vụ tràn dầu) off the coast of (ngoài khơi ..) Brazil.

Chevron said it had underestimated  (không lường được, đánh giá không đúng) the pressure of underwater oil deposits  (lớp trầm tích dầu dưới nước) while drilling, causing oil to rush up (ùa ra, trào lên) the bore hole and seep into  (thấm lên, rò ra) the surrounding seabed (lòng biển).

Brazilian regulators (lực lượng quản lý giám sát) said 416,400 litres had leaked (rò rĩ ra ngoài) since the accident happened almost two weeks ago.

Chevron said the leak had now been plugged (chỗ rò rĩ đã được bịt kín).

But the head of (người đứng đầu) Chevron’s Brazil operation (đơn vị khai thác), George Buck, said there continued to be  (sẽ còn) a residual oil flow (dòng dầu còn sót lại) from undersea rock (vĩa đá dưới lòng biển) near the well in the Frade oil project, 370km (230 miles) off the Brazilian coast.

Brazil’s Energy Minister Edison Lobao had earlier said the company would be “severely punished” if it was found to have failed in its environmental responsibilities.  (không làm tròn trách nhiệm)

‘Questionable methods’ (phương pháp đáng ngờ)

Chevron initially estimated that 400-650 barrels of oil had formed a sheen (vệt sáng loáng) on the water after seeping from the seabed near the well.

But the international environmental group Skytruth said satellite images suggested the spill was many times bigger.

Police environment experts (chuyên gia môi trường) have been trying to assess the scale of  (đánh giá mức độ) the spill.

Head of the Federal Police Environmental Division Fabio Scliar also questioned (nghi ngờ, đặt dấu hỏi về) the methods Chevron was using to clean up (thu dọn) the spill.

Mr Scliar said the company was “pushing” the oil to the bottom of the sea, rather than gathering it, putting corals in the area at risk (gây nguy cơ .. đối với .. ) of pollution.

In recent years Brazil has discovered billions of barrels of oil in deep water  (ở các vùng nước sâu) that could make it one of the world’s top five producers.

So far there has been little public debate (công luận ít chú ý đến ) about the environmental dangers of offshore drilling (khoan dò xa bờ).

Political discussion (tranh luận chính trị) has instead focused on how future oil revenues (thu nhập, lợi tức về dầu hỏa) should be divided between different states.
